Introduction to Subsea Pipe Installation- Reel Lay Method

Deep-Water Pipeline Installation: Process, Advantages, and Challenges

The Reel Lay method is commonly used in deep-water pipeline installations, especially in regions like the Gulf of Mexico. This method involves pre-welding pipe joints onshore and winding them onto a large reel drum on the lay vessel. Once at the installation site, the vessel unspools the pipe, straightening it with the help of tensioners as it is laid on the seabed. The key advantage of this method is its speed, as most welding is completed onshore, reducing offshore labor costs. However, the method requires careful planning due to the pipe's plastic deformation during spooling, which affects its fatigue life. This method is most cost-effective when spool bases are near the installation site, reducing vessel transit time.
