Common Offshore Pipe Installation Methods
The three most common offshore pipe installation methods: S-lay, J-lay, and reel-lay. The names of these methods are derived from the shape that the pipe catenary forms as it exits the vessel. The reel-lay method, though similar in shape to the J-lay, gets its name from the process where the pipe is welded onshore in long stock lengths and then wound onto a reel on the vessel. This contrasts with the S-lay and J-lay methods, where the pipe is welded directly on the vessel during the installation process. The following slides will provide a more detailed explanation of each method. Representative vessels for each method include the Solitaire from Allseas for S-lay, the Seven Borealis from Subsea 7 for J-lay, and the Deep Energy from TechnipFMC for reel-lay.
