Introduction to Subsea Pipe Installation- History of Pipe Installation

Pipeline Installation: From Galveston Bay to Operation Pluto

The early history of pipeline installation saw significant developments in the 1920s and 30s, primarily in shallow waters like lakes and bays. Houston contractors Brown & Root were pioneers in this field, laying some of the first offshore pipelines in Galveston Bay for Humble Oil Company. Their innovative method involved welding the pipes onshore, floating them using barrels, and then sinking these barrels to the bay floor—a rudimentary yet effective technique for the time. The historical timeline continues into 1944 with Operation Pluto, a landmark event that further advanced pipeline installation technology.
