Horizontal Directional Drilling Introduction and Fundamentals- Swabbing

Swab Phase in HDD

The swabbing phase is an optional final step in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), often used before pulling the product pipe into the reamed hole. The purpose of a swab pass is to clean the hole, not to cut or enlarge it. This is typically required for pipes 20 inches or larger, using a swab tool or reamer that is slightly smaller than the reamed hole. The process involves flushing the hole with mud to remove debris and ensure a clean path for the pipe installation.
