Reamers and Hole Openers in HDD: Functions and Applications
In Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), reamers are essential for enlarging the pilot hole to the required size. Reamers are classified into types like barrel (compaction) reamers, blade reamers, and mixing reamers, each designed for specific soil conditions. When drilling through hard rock, hole openers with roller cones are used instead of reamers. These tools reduce torque through rotating bearings and high mud flow, preventing damage and effectively cutting through rock while maintaining low torque requirements.
