Horizontal Directional Drilling Introduction and Fundamentals- Pullback

The Pullback Process in HDD

The final stage of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is the pullback stage, where the product pipe is pulled through the pre-enlarged hole. Ideally, the entire section of pipe is pulled back in one continuous string, but sometimes it must be done in segments. A swivel is used to prevent the product pipe from rotating. An alternative method, called continuous borehole reaming, involves reaming and pulling the pipe simultaneously, though this method is less preferred due to the increased risk of getting stuck.
