Horizontal Directional Drilling Introduction and Fundamentals- Drill Bits

Drilling Bits: Types and Applications in HDD

In Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), selecting the right drill bit is crucial. Slant face bits (or "duck bill bits") are commonly used for smaller diameter installations (under 12 inches) in various soil conditions, excluding rock. For larger installations, tricone bits are most common, suitable for harder soils and rock. These bits feature rotating cones that reduce torque and stress, making them effective in challenging formations. Tricone bits can be used with jetting assemblies or mud motors, depending on the drilling environment.
