Geotech Report on Soil Composition
In this example from a geotechnical report, we analyze the distribution of granular soil particles. The chart breaks down soil composition by sieve size, with #200 being the critical point separating fine soils from granular ones. In this case, 57% of the sample is classified as gravel, with a maximum particle size of 3/4 inch. The sample also contains 6.3% coarse sand, 4.4% medium sand, 8.5% fine sand, and 3.7% fines (silt and clay). The presence of fines is crucial for maintaining borehole stability in HDD. However, another sample with only 10% fines and a higher sand content (30%) might pose challenges due to the lower fine content, leading to potential difficulties in maintaining borehole integrity during drilling.
