Geotechnical Challenges in Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects
Key factors include the drill length, hole diameter, and subsurface material, with the latter being the primary determinant of technical feasibility. Challenges arise from subsurface conditions such as large grain content (gravel, pebbles, boulders), high rock strength, abrasive or poor-quality rock, and solution cavities in karst formations. These karst formations, common in regions like western Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and West Virginia, are created by the dissolution of soluble rocks like limestone and can pose significant difficulties in the drilling process, sometimes manifesting as sinkholes or caves.
