Favorable & Unfavorable Conditions for HDD: 

See the conditions that are favorable and unfavorable for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). Favorable conditions typically include dense sands with sufficient fines, silts, clays (which often maintain an open hole condition), and softer hard rock. High groundwater levels are also beneficial as they aid in building a stabilizing membrane. In contrast, unfavorable conditions for HDD include very soft or loose soils, gravels, pebbles, boulders, mixed ground conditions, and very hard or fractured rock. Key considerations include the distribution and characteristics of overburden deposits, which consist of alluvial materials, residual soils, and glacial deposits overlaying bedrock.
