Fundamentals and Analysis of Liquid Pipeline Hydraulics- Heat Transfer in Pipelines

Determining Pipeline Temperature Profiles: Solution Methodology

Review the methodology for determining the temperature profile of a pipeline, which is influenced by the pipeline's physical characteristics, surrounding environment, and fluid properties. The temperature change in the pipeline fluid due to heat transfer is calculated using basic calorimetry, considering the difference between outlet and inlet temperatures, the heat transfer rate, specific heat capacity, and mass flow rate. The heat transfer rate per unit length is influenced by the cross-sectional area of the pipe, the temperature gradient, and the overall heat transfer coefficient (U), which encompasses the effects of conduction, convection, and, less commonly, radiation. These principles are essential for accurately modeling the thermal behavior of pipelines under various operational conditions.
