Basic Pipeline Corrosion Theory- Oxidation and Reduction

Oxidation and Reduction Reactions

Oxidation and reduction reactions are fundamental to the process of corrosion. Oxidation occurs when an atom or molecule loses electrons, decreasing its negative charge, which often leads to pitting on metal surfaces. Conversely, reduction happens when an atom gains electrons, increasing its negative charge, and providing protection to the metal. In a corrosion cell, both of these reactions occur simultaneously. This balance is crucial for understanding how metals degrade or are protected under various environmental conditions, including pH levels and the presence of acids or alkalis.
