Basic CP Circuits - Understanding and Measuring AC and DC in Power Systems

Measuring AC and DC in Cathodic Protection Systems with Rectifiers

Structure-to-electrolyte potentials are measured in both AC and DC, especially when systems are co-located in corridors. AC is prevalent throughout cathodic protection systems, from the primary and secondary sides of the transformer to the AC taps on rectifier panels. After passing through diodes, the rectifier converts AC to DC, but induced AC can still affect the system. Measuring AC leakage and rectified AC is essential, especially when induced AC continues even with the rectifier off. AC and DC meters are necessary for troubleshooting, battery checks, and reading shunts, which can measure both AC and DC.
