Course overview
The Pipeline Toolbox
is home to many tools and calculators. The PLTB User’s Guide presents
information, guidelines and procedures for use during design, construction,
operations and integrity tasks for field or office applications.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
has emerged as a preferred crossing method in many situations for the
installation of oil and gas pipelines as well as other utilities under
watercourses, roads, rail lines, steep slopes and other obstacles. This
technology has been enthusiastically embraced by proponents, contractors and
regulators as a potentially low impact construction technique.
The purpose of this document is to
assist pipeline companies, contractors and regulators in the planning, evaluation
and construction of HDD crossings. In particular, the document provides
guidance for:
Pull Force Calculation
Installation Stresses
Operational Stress Analysis
